What is the difference between outpatient and inpatient drug rehab?

    outpatient- You get to go home
    inpatient- you have to stay there.

    Inpatient you live in the hospital where you are watched and monitored 24/7. Outpatient you only spend a normal 8 hour day there. You do have to urinate in a cup to prove you are clean. You also have to comply with the outpatient rules.

    Inpatient is more intensive treatment, which usually involves detoxing the patient… meaning they are coming off whatever they were using..

    Outpatient is less intensive, however, heroin addicts are considered to be long term outpatient rehab patients because of the need for methadone… hence the methadone clinics….

    Sometimes, an addict will do the inpatient treatment and then the outpatient treatment as a way of re-entering normal life…

    I go to an outpatient program. I visit the methadone clinic daily, sometimes I get a urine test here and there. They are quick visit and once a week I talk to a councellor(sp) at the clinic.

    Inpatient programs, you are housed there for a period of time. First they detox you then when you are feeling better, they have you attend classes to help you learn about your addiction and help you learn valuable tools to prevent relasps when you do leave the program.
