Does anyone know if a person can get medical insurance after going through drug rehab?
My son went through drug rehab one year ago and is doing great. He has not relapsed at all and has set some quality goals for his life and is pursuing them. He is only 21 years old and is currently in vocational training and cannot afford his own medical insurance at this point in time, but I would like to provide that for him. Does anyone know if he's eligible since he has a history of drug abuse?

Congratulations to your son.
The answer to your question may be different in different states. I'm an insurance agent in Connecticut and will answer you based on my knowledge of the way it works in my state.
State based programs should take your son now.
Group insurance programs should accept your son now.
If he used IV drugs certain private insurance companies will not consider him at any point, but this may not be the case with other companies. With other companies he may have to wait 3 to 5 years before his drug history will have no impact on his ability to get coverage through a private health insurance carrier.
Good Luck to the two of you!
