Doctors are now considering alcoholism a disease, but if you’ve ever watched Steve Wilkos, you would know that a disease is something that happens to you, an addiction (such as alcoholism) is something you do to yourself.

Alcoholism is a disease. Addiction to anything (drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling) is a psychiatric disorder which causes the person to use these things to gain pleasure.

Depending how you define it many things are a disease. Societies dropping of litter in the street, obesity.

There may be a genetic predisposition in some people to alcoholism, but people ‘become’ problem drinkers they are not born.

Doctors and psychologists are not in agreement over how to define alcoholism. And the rehab society hasn’t helped.
People will twist it up six different ways to find a way of defining alcoholism as a disease as the prospect of taking responsibilty for our collosally dumb behaviour seems to awful to contemplate.

Alcoholism (though most is problem, heavy or abusive drinking) is mostly a behaviour. A secondary behaviour that later becomes a problem in itself. The primary problem was likely some untrue, illogical, unhelpful perceptions, ie. thinking related issues. Most people who focus on the disease as their primary cause will then think problem solved by abstinence and miss dealing with their originating issues and often be unhappy or unproductive in sobriety.
