    Dude what I meant …
    Dude what I meant by that is in the begining it was based on these principles…it has no ties with any religions or cults, most of my friends in the program are athiests in fact.
    Each persons’ program is individual and you are certainly not obligated to practice any religion, that is the truth.

    “According to these definitions, multiple causation (bio/psycho/social) does not rule out the classification of anything (alcoholism or or other addiction, behavioral pathology such as OCD, etc.) as a disease”

    The point you are missing is that their has to be a DISEASE ENTITY (physiopathological) present for a health anomaly to qualify for a disease classification…

    “Don’t genetic as well as environmental factors play a role in obesity?”

    No…

    Only behavioural factors play a causal role in obesity…

    I came into the AA …
    I came into the AA 6 months ago and it’s really helped turn my life around and given me the support I need to recover from my addiction.
    Howvere it only works if you are umble and completely honest with yourself AAANNNNND there are no religious ties or practices despite it being based on some “religious” principles.

    @Hammersley1967 : I have no shame or public disgrace now because I’m SOBER…if I was drinking I would most definately be avoiding all my responsibilities an disgracing myself.

    @empee74

    Actually it is mandatory in many situations, court, detox, treatment centers. Its been forced upon myself and others and I believe that it is incredibly dangerouse to ones recovery to identify oneself as an addict once one stops using drugs,
    peace out man be well

  10. empee74 Says:

    Really why should …
    Really why should we as han beings berate one another I mean cmon live an let live folks . AA members shouldn’t be evangelical about the program so why attack them? If ya have a bad taste in your mouth from AA then do it your way. whatever works is good. Peace my fellow sapiens

    It was a stupid question to begin with..lol.

    Responsability…now THATS whats missing in the world.

  13. empee74 Says:

    What does it matter …
    What does it matter people Jesus!! If it works and you have half a brain then great if it doesn’t than try something else! Nothing in AA IS MANDATORY! you people crack me up debating this shit.

  14. Hammersley1967 Says:

    @Morethanenough1

    “What kind of loosers have to convince themselves that an addiction is a disease? Why? Bc they can’t accept the guilt? Or the responsability?”

    SHORT ANSWER = AA LOSERS

    Why?

    Not because they can’t accept the guilt or responsibility, but because they can’t accept the public disgrace and consequent shame…

  15. Hammersley1967 Says:

    @empee74

    “As long …
    @empee74

    “As long as an alcoholic realizes that their is something greater than him or herself”

    And there we have it…

    Why does this “higher power” have to be “greater than him or herself”…

    Surely all that is required is that the higher power is greater than one’s addiction?

  16. Hammersley1967 Says:

    @SinisterUnicorn

    ” …
    @SinisterUnicorn

    “One can only work the steps if one subscribes to a specific God.”

    Yes, that’s right…

    One can only “work the steps” (in an orthodox AA mode) if one subscribes to a belief in a Abrahamic God-head.

    This is the elephant in the corner that is so inanely brushed over by AA rhetoric…

    However, some (ex) members, such as yours truly, work the steps in an unorthodox manner that involves a convoluted series of mental gymnastics that leaves “the” program ultimately unrecognisable.

  17. Morethanenough1 Says:

    What kind of …
    What kind of loosers have to convince themselves that an addiction is a disease? Why? Bc they can’t accept the guilt? Or the responsability? lol…get a life ppl! Drinking is no more a disease than watching too much t.v. or spending too much time on you tube!

  19. empee74 Says:

    No I was replying …
    No I was replying to you for sure. And again I’ll say that anyone can work the steps and believe in whatever or however many gods or non gods they wish. It’s really a waste of my time to reply further. As long as an alcoholic realizes that their is something greater than him or herself is all that is asked. And that is still only a suggestion! There are NO requirements in AA. really I could care less because I’m still seeking a higher power myself, it’s a life long journey.

  20. SinisterUnicorn Says:

    Your exceedingly …
    Your exceedingly verbose comments (which curiously addressed me without being a reply to me – perhaps a way to prevent my response?) continue to refer to a single God (so polytheism is apparently out), and you did not address my assertion that the Big Book’s God is described as omnipotent and interventionist (excluding deism) as well as benevolent (excluding pantheism) and communicative (again, excluding pantheism and deism). One can only work the steps if one subscribes to a specific God.

  21. hpmc9 Says:

    when Bill WIlson …
    when Bill WIlson described ‘an alcoholic’ he was describing himself

    was he really decribing ‘an alcoholic’, or was he describing a Narcissisist who drank too much (ie himself) and extrapolating the definition to everyone else, whether it fit or not (just like a Narcissist would?)

  22. hpmc9 Says:

    what alcoholism is, …
    what alcoholism is, is just a very bad habit

    ciggarette smoking is even more addictive, yet, when ordinary people quit smoking in the 1960s, they didnt ‘admit they were powerless’ and work 12 steps (even though it really WAS killing them), they just QUIT

    might have taken more than one try

    but then they just forgot about it

  23. 3tothe2tothe1 Says:

    I have never known …
    I have never known anything like the obsession to drink. It was all-consuming. Will power did NOTHING for me, I had to get help.

  24. videoimageart Says:

    YEs, Alcoholism Is a Disease

  25. enriquehoja Says:

    Another thing, a ” …
    Another thing, a “disorder” seems to be where we throw everything whose causation is undefined or unknown. Let’s face it, with our current knowledge or genetics and the human brain, you can’t argue that alcoholism is any less or more of a disease than other addictions (substance or behavioral, e.g. alcoholism (disease) vs. drug and eating problems (disorder). Don’t genetic as well as environmental factors play a role in obesity?
