She is 60 years old and been a drunk for a long time. Her psychiatrist says she can’t stop cold turkey or it will probably kill her. Do I take her to the ER, then hope they detox her…She may not agree, but she can no longer live alone, drive or take care of herself. She is blacking out frequently and falling. Her stomach is a mess. Any suggestions for treatment centers near Sacramento? She is in Placer County. Thanks
Detoxing in a hospital is the easiest and safest way for her to do this.
It’s probably her liver not her stomach.
Once she is safely detoxed the next step would be a long term rehab
( 3-6 months). I know you have good intentions but if your sister is not ready to stop drinking she will never stay in a rehab. If she has insurance to cover a rehab you might check with them. They also may help you figure out what your next steps are.
May I suggest asking other family members to help you, this is not something you can do alone. You should educate yourself in the steps that an alcoholic or addict goes through. There also maybe a lot of let downs, so be prepared. They say relapse is part of recovery and I can tell you from experience it’s true.
For me it took a least a one year plan and I was willing to do this, in fact I asked my family for help.
Feel free to email me anytime.
Also stay away from rehabs called NARCONON or NEW LIFE they are SCIENTOLOGY. They have them all over the world.
Take care and never give up!
I can tell you that I got my father into one just in time, b/c he was about to kill himself with alcohol. , After losing his whole life to booze, restourant he owned, my mother, ME!!. He was there for 3 months then off to a halfway house type thing and he stayed there for about 2 years, now he owns another restourant, met a rich lady in the city and is getting married. ITs definetly worth going to if you need help. I may have to go to one soon myself.. : (

yeah – to enable an alcoholic to reach a point where they are ready to stop drinking they have to reach a place called their ‘rock bottom’ and whilst other people are still helping them to drink they will never reach this point and therefore never need to stop drinking.
Helping an alcoholic to drink can be done in many ways such as:
– Buying the alcohol
– Excusing their behaviour
– Hiding their behaviour
– Lying for them to employers to help them keep a job
This list goes on and on and is called enabling.
Once an alcoholic cannot manipulate others into enabling them to drink life will become much harder and they will reach their rock bottom, the place where they decide they cannot go on like this any longer and so reach a point of surrender and reach out for help with their alcoholism.
Alcoholism is a progressive disease which kills many people each year – although no cure for alcoholism has yet been found there is a solution which can help alcoholics stop drinking one day at a time (and these days soon add up!)
If you know someone who is an alcoholic suggest they go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. I would also suggest that you get some support for yourself at Al-Anon – the helpline numbers will be available in your phone directory.
I have drank on a daily basis (beer) only for 20 years now. Sometimes between 10 and 18 beers a day. I have stopped now, it has been seven days and I have not had a single DT from it. I still have the urge but out of boredom and routine. Can I break this without any help? And if so what are any methods that could help me.. keep in mind I own a bar…. thanks
Yes, definatelty. It will be quite difficult, but so far you seem to be doing a good job. It’s all about willpower, if you really want to you should be able to. But, most likely, you will need some support — especially if you own a bar. You should ask your friends to quit drinking with you for a few days each just so you have some one to be sober with. But hey, if you find it difficult to quit without help there is absolutely NO shame in getting a little bit of help on the side.
Best of luck.

If so why or why not?
Antibuse is used whenever the patient is most likely to repeat his or her abuse of alcohol. It is not used as often as it was 20 years ago, because they found that some chronic alcoholics could and would drink even when ON Antibuse. The preferred treatment these days is intensive therapy with a counslor, while admitted to a treatment facility combining one on one and group counseling. A great deal is dependent on the willingness of the patient to stop abusing substances, so the focus has turned to getting to the root of the dependence problem, and eliminating the posibility of other mental health problems being present that feed the need for dependency. This seems to be more sucessfull, i.e. treating the patient as a whole rather than by one of many symptoms that may present themselves.
A) impatient treatment center.
B) outpatient treatment center.
C)counseling and support groups.
D) all of above.
If you misspelled A then all of the above. If not, then just B and C.
