Why do US courts make Alcoholics Anonymous part of their sentencing?

Alcoholics Anonymous is admittedly a part of a religious cult. How can the courts justify forcing people to attend these meetings as part of their sentencing?

The Second and Seventh Federal District Courts, The New York State Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Tennessee have all declared AA at least "religious in nature" and a violation of the Establishment Clause.

Politicians and judges like sentencing people for three reasons: 1) they are members themselves, or 2) it give them the appearance that they are "tough on crime", yet compassionate 3) mandating AA meetings keeps the offenders busy for awhile without costing the state the amount of money it takes to warehouse them in jail.

Is alcoholism a disease or a lifestyle habit?

I think is is NOT an illness as many of you are brainwashed to believe but a lifestyle that can be altered.

It all depends on what you define an "illness" to be.

Tuberculosis is an illness, diabetes is an illness, and cancer is an illness. You would have it that the major difference between these conditions and alcoholism is that none of those conditions are caused by any conscious choice of the afflicted.

Gingivitis is an illness, but that is easily preventable by regular brushing and flossing.

Malaria is an illness, but that is easily preventable by pest control.

AIDS is an illness, but that is easily preventable by using a condom.

The flu is an illness, but that can be easily prevented by getting a flu shot.

YET…

Alcoholism is not an illness because the alcoholic has become such by behaving in the same way as millions of people are able to do every day without any serious consequence?

Does the future alcoholic have any forewarning that, while in his teens and early twenties, he or she will ultimately be unable to control the behavior that seemingly everyone else around him/her is safely engaging in?

In case you haven’t noticed, I happen to deal with alcoholism on a daily basis. Do you think I planned to become an alcoholic? Do you think I have a choice whether or not I have to deal with this horrible condition each and every day I wake up? Do you think that I would not give anything to be able to have a social drink like a normal person?

Yes, I have a choice whether to take that first drink or not. What I do not have a choice in is whether that one drink will send me back to that horrible place I try each and every day to avoid.

I don’t give a rat’s azz whether you think it is a disease or an addiction. Just don’t go around saying someone can choose to be or not be an alcoholic by the lifestyle choices they make. You will get more sympathy from telling a plane crash victim that they shouldn’t have made the choice to get on that plane.

Does the medical profession still use antibuse in the treatment of alcoholism?

If so why or why not?

Antibuse is used whenever the patient is most likely to repeat his or her abuse of alcohol. It is not used as often as it was 20 years ago, because they found that some chronic alcoholics could and would drink even when ON Antibuse. The preferred treatment these days is intensive therapy with a counslor, while admitted to a treatment facility combining one on one and group counseling. A great deal is dependent on the willingness of the patient to stop abusing substances, so the focus has turned to getting to the root of the dependence problem, and eliminating the posibility of other mental health problems being present that feed the need for dependency. This seems to be more sucessfull, i.e. treating the patient as a whole rather than by one of many symptoms that may present themselves.

What type of group therapy is best for adult children of alcoholics? A psychoeducational or counseling group?

I am writing a group proposal for my Intro to Group Therapy class and I was a little confused as to which kind of group would best help adult children of alcoholics.

Doesn’t the group "Adult Children of Alcoholics" already exist as part of AA?

Why do so many people believe Alcoholics Anonymous works, when it’s actually a horrible cult-like organization

Does anyone have any experience with this nonsense?
My source is personal experience. It doesn’t take a genius to see the simple brainwashing techniques and cult-like atmosphere.

You’re not alone. There are at least a dozen yahoo groups that are anti-AA, most with over a hundred members, one with over a thousand.

I think it’s like the old saying about repeating a lie enough times….

I knew there was something wrong the first time I walked into the rooms; I didn’t stay long, but every few years, I’d try it again because everybody told me I must have gone to a few bad meetings, not all AA is like that.

If you don’t like AA, going to a different meeting is like going to a different McDonald’s if you don’t like the food at one.

I bounced in and out of the rooms for 20 years, never managing more than a few months sobriety. Even so, I managed to pick up some of their dogma that PREVENTED me from staying sober. I learned I was powerless, I had a disease, and that alcoholism is genetic. With those excuses, it’s a wonder I ever did manage to get sober at all. Once a person decides they are powerless, they better have a micro-managing, personal "higher power" that waiting to grant them their daily reprieve from the drink or they’re doomed to die, drunk in a gutter.

AA got a big boost in membership when the courts started mandating people to the rooms; aproxomately 2/3 are there due to courts, employee programs, or to satisfy mandates from government agencies. And they say it’s based on "attraction, rather than promotion". Just as they say "spiritual, not religious" while they talk about God. They keep repeating it and expect people to believe it over their own eyes and ears.

Thank goodness for the internet, and for the courts that have heard cases on mandating AA attendance. EVERY higher court that has heard these cases has had a final outcome of AA being at least religious in nature, and has ended coercion through the courts in 4 districts and one state.

Is it legal to fire someone due to a alcohol related incident if they have the disease of alcoholism.?

I was ticketed for a DWI and lost my job and have been diagnosed with the disease of alcholism. Is it constitutionally ok to fire me if I have a disease?

It depends you your States labor laws. The ADA recognizes alcoholism as a disorder that falls within the ADA statutes. This may or may not affect you.

You would need to seek legal advice to get an accurate answer.
