Is there anything more satisfying than critical thinking? Is critical thinking an addiction like alcoholism?

I have to thank you for a very amusing mental image:

<Imagines a scuffy-looking guy on a street corner, accosting passersby. "Hey, buddy! I got some hot philosophical thoughts here. Show me some green and work your grey.">

Heh.

The Impact On Children Who Parents Are Alcoholics Or Drug Addicts / Educational Video PSA

The Impact On Children Who Parents Are Alcoholics Or Drug Addicts / Educational Video PSA. Children in families experiencing alcohol or drug abuse need attention, guidance and support. They may be growing up in homes in which the problems are either denied or covered up. These children need to have their experiences validated. They also need safe, reliable adults in whom to confide and who will support them, reassure them, and provide them with appropriate help for their age. They need to have fun and just be kids. Families with alcohol and drug problems usually have high levels of stress and confusion. High stress family environments are a risk factor for early and dangerous substance use, as well as mental and physical health problems. It is important to talk honestly with children about what is happening in the family and to help them express their concerns and feelings. Children need to trust the adults in their lives and to believe that they will support them. Children living with alcohol or drug abuse in the family can benefit from participating in educational support groups in their school student istance programs. Those age 11 and older can join Alateen groups, which meet in community settings and provide healthy connections with others coping with similar issues. Being ociated with the activities of a faith community can also help. Dependence on alcohol and drugs is our most serious national public health problem. It is prevalent among rich and poor, in all regions of the country, and all ethnic and social groups. Millions of Americans misuse or are dependent on alcohol or drugs. Most of them have families who suffer the consequences, often serious, of living with this illness. If there is alcohol or drug dependence in your family, remember you are not alone. Most individuals who abuse alcohol or drugs have jobs and are productive members of society creating a false hope in the family that “it’s not that bad.” The problem is that addiction tends to worsen over time, hurting both the addicted person and all the family members. It is especially damaging to young children and adolescents. People with this illness really may believe that they drink normally or that “everyone” takes drugs. These false beliefs are called denial; this denial is a part of the illness. Alcoholism and other drug addiction have genetic and environmental causes. Both have serious consequences for children who live in homes where parents are involved. More than 28 million Americans are children of alcoholics; nearly 11 million are under the age of 18. This figure is magnified by the countless number of others who are affected by parents who are impaired by other psychoactive drugs. Alcoholism and other drug addiction tend to run in families. Children of addicted parents are more at risk for alcoholism and other drug abuse than are other children. Children of addicted parents are the highest risk group of children to become alcohol and drug abusers due to both genetic and family environment factors. Biological children of alcohol dependent parents who have been adopted continue to have an increased risk (2-9 fold) of developing alcoholism. Recent studies suggest a strong genetic component, particularly for early onset of alcoholism in males. Sons of alcoholic fathers are at fourfold risk compared with the male offspring of non-alcoholic fathers. Use of substances by parents and their adolescent children is strongly correlated; generally, if parents take drugs, sooner or later their children will also. Adolescents who use drugs are more likely to have one or more parents who also use drugs. The influence of parental attitudes on a child’s drug taking behaviors may be as important as actual drug abuse by the parents. An adolescent who perceives that a parent is permissive about the use of drugs is more likely to use drugs. Public Service Announcement from SAMHSA in the public domain. Did anyone hear the radio piece on NPR about Alcoholics Anonymous and/or 12 step programs last sunday?

I am trying to get a copy of it but don’t know anything about who did it, or how to get a copy. Any ideas?

I went to the NPR website and searched for "Alcoholics Anonymous", didn’t see anything for the last few months.

Of course, it may not go right up, especially if they plan to re-broadcast it during the week. My suggestion would be to check their site after this weekend.

Do you think it would be a good idea to have a subcategory for alcoholism/addiction?

If so, please go the suggestion board and give a "thumbs up", possibly even a comment.

Thanks : )

I agree that there are alot of people looking for that kind of help on here and your suggestion is a good one. Good Luck with the suggestion and yes I gave it a thumbs up.

12 Step Programs (including Al-Anon)…Cult or Effective?

When did Penn and Teller become experts on treating addiction. It certainly will not work on those who do not have a belief that anything outside of themselves is powerful. It does not work for those who think they do not have a problem. It does not work for those who want to continue using. It does not work for those think they can do it all on their own. It does not work for those who do not want to make changes in all areas of their life. AA is a cognitive behavioral approach. CBT is frequently used to treat addiction. As for a cult, dude you need to look up the word. There is no coersion in AA just people who want to help others. Valley Violet is wrong. It does not take away personal responsibility at all. As far as ordering people to AA, we order people to go to school. They learn if they want to. We order people to anger management classes. They learn if they want to. I do not see the difference.

Are you sick of having society call alcoholism and drug addiction a disease?

Are you sick of our government paying disability social security to people who CHOOSE to drink and take drugs?

Where is the PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?
Lewis – your answer actually makes me angry. My father died of cancer is 1991.
He did not CHOOSE this disease – it chose him.
He did not walk into a store and ask for a pack of cancer.
In my opinion the LEAST able to take care of themselves are CHILDREN ,and I am all for schools and such. That’s the government taking care of it’s own.
I WISH YOU WELL WITH YOUR TREATMENTS AND I HOPE YOU ARE AROUND A LONG TIME TO DISAGREE WITH ME. The world would be boring if everyone had the same opinions all the time…BUT…on the BIG PICTURE…I wish the world would agree more often.

YESSSSS!!! THANK YOU!!! Have you seen the South Park episode about this?

It is so a choice and, personally having an alchoholic deadbeat father, I KNOW that all this disease crap just gives them an excuse to keep doing it, it makes them feel like it’s not their fault and they’re the victims.

Not to say that there shouldn’t be any sympathy. Just a very small amount for most people.

12 step programs for shopping addicts?

I am looking for some 12 step programs for shopping/spending addictions in TX. Keller, Roanoke, Southlake, Grapevine areas.

CC

You could talk to churches in the area, would be my recommendation. They might have a program, know of a program, or be willing to start a 12 step program for shopping addicts.
I would personally recommend that you go to AA meetings if you are unsuccessfull in getting into a 12 step program for shopping addicts. It’s the same 12 steps, so there’s no harm. Plus you arn’t supposed to talk about "war stories" about the good times you had while "feeding your addiction" so there’s really no reason why AA would not be just as beneficial to you as a 12 step program specifically for shopping addicts.
Good luck.
